What Will They Wear: MTV Video Music Awards 2013

The second biggest event in music is mere hours away and the likes of Katy Perry and Taylor Swift are probably putting finishing touches on their looks for tonight. Aside from the awesome performances and the awards handed (duh!), a lot of eyes will be on the red carpet divas and here are some of my predictions of what we might see on the RC.

This will be Gaga's first big red carpet appearance since her hip surgery, so she better make it a memorable one. Everyone has been buzzing about how Lady Gaga is trying to purify and simplify her style so this black Balenciaga dress could be a great choice if it's a bit customized to have a little more va-va-voom. At the 2010 VMAs Lady Gaga completely blew me away with an asortment of McQueen gowns so, naturally, I picked a white stunner from the house's resort collection. It has that combination of innocence and sex appeal that Gaga could pull of rather nicely. After wearing their jumpsuit and having a look of theirs in her latest music video, I definitely could see Lady Gaga in a piece by Maison Martin Margiela. If she doesn't consider the mask too passé, she could throw it into the mix, Kanye style.

Katy Perry is also trying to pull a style 180, so I'm guessing there will be no more bras squirting whipped cream in the future. In her past few appearances, Ms. Perry called upon the Herve Leger designer Max Azria so maybe she'll do it for tonight aswell. At this year's Grammy awards, Katy put her twins in the spotlight wearing a Gucci gown, so this romantic and summery dress from the same house could be her top choice. The edgiest (and my personal favorite) choice is this asymmetric, multi-printed Rodarte dress that I think Katy could pull of beautifully. Since she's lately become a Vogue darling, and the Rodarte sisters are definitely Vogue designers, this could be the choice we'll see tonight.

There hasn't been as big of a transformation as was Miley's in the past 12 months. The girl basically went from hair extensions and frilly dresses to a punky hairstlye and leather minis. I for one am enjoying her red carpet outings so selecting just three looks was quite a tough thing to do. Miley has definitely gone high fashion on us so I bet we'll see her donning a cool and hip designer such as Balmain. She stunned in one of their jumpsuits, so it's a safe bet that she'll call upon the famed Parisian house for her look tonight. A cool and matching jacket and pants could be a different route than what we'd expect, but Miley could certainly pull it off with ease. In case she wants to look a tad classier and more sophisticated she just might choose this silver stunner from Proenza Schouler. The chain detailing is so Miley, right? A risky choice, for sure, but not a terribly unexpected one is this cut-out Versace dress that is equally sexy as it is dangerous.

Taylor Swift is not exactly known as a fashion risk taker, considering she mostly wears these 3 designers, so she was the easiest of the bunch to choose for. No matter whether she picks a delicate, yet sexy piece from Elie Saab, a steaming see-through dress by J. Mendel or glitters like gold in Zuhair Murad, I'm sure she'll look beautiful.

Selena Gomez has become somewhat of an edgy fashionista after wearing multiple Versace pieces and loads of young (mostly English) designers. Knowing her great relationship with the fashion house, we might see Miss Gomez in a light yellow cut-out dress by Versace. Selena has never feared short and tight dresses, so this light blue David Koma dress with silver detailing might end up being her number one choice. Clever paneling seen in this Antonio Berardi piece will certify Selena's status as a new sex simbol.

Also, I'll be live-tweeting from tonight's ceremony, so follow me on Twitter for fresh coverage.

Katrantzou Khameleons

Mary Katrantzou has made a name for herself by creating the most amazing prints in the business. In the past she sent out girls adorned in French gardens (yep, entire gardens, not just flowers), typewriters and vintage stamps. For this fall she created cerebral prints of woods, lakes, parks, viaducts et al. that just screamed to be made into collages. The only thing that bothers me is...why haven't I done this sooner?

Red Cold

There's a saying: When in doubt - wear red. There is something to be said about that. Red is considered to be a color of love, passion and strength. The tamer of fashionistas love to add it to their look as a surprising pop of color with a sexy stiletto or a lipstick shade, but it seems to me that the most committed of fashion people will be making a huge statement this fall with bright red coats and jackets.

Many may say that's one of the toughest colors to pull off with ease and grace and they are absolutely right. You're faced with a definite possibility of it consuming you and your personality getting lost in the fiery shade. That's why you should pick simple and classic cuts (even sporty ones are allowed, as seen on the Nina Ricci runway) and the most basic accessories (such as Olivia Palermo's simple, black leather bag and shoe) and let your statement coat do all the talking.

Balmain Dynasty

The second I saw Manon Leloup gallop down the Balmain runway during Paris Fashion Week last February, I immediately thought of Dynasty. Although an average person born in 1993 doesn't (and probably shouldn't) remember this soap, I have some vague recollection of reruns on some Croatian television when I was a child. The plot doesn't interest me in the slightest, but the style...the style is OTT awesomeness and (I believe) the core inspiration for Oliver Rousteing's fall 2013 collection for Balmain.

If in the past week you've opened a newspaper or a gossip blog, you couldn't have missed Lady Gaga rocking some Dynasty-inspired Balmain. My guess is that she commissioned every single piece from the collection (well, except for the ones worn by Kate Bosworth and Zoe Saldana) to channel her inner Alexis and Krystle.

Pop of Fashion

It's shaping up to be a fall filled with pop divas and their comeback records. Lady Gaga and Katy Perry have come on pretty strong the past few weeks promoting Artpop's lead single Applause and Prism's Roar, respectively. Pop princess Britney Spears has been teasing her fans through social networks with reports of long hours in the studio for quite some time, but only yesterday came out with a concrete release date of her new (I presume) album.

As soon as I heard the titles these ladies have chosen, I immediately thought in terms of styling. Or better yet how easy, fun and effective it would be if they (and their stylists) took the most literal route. Katy seems to have already taken my advice (telepathically) and is seen walking around town in animal print sweaters and the single cover features a roaring tiger. Gaga is going through a major style cleanse and hopefully Brit will reinvent herself, yet again.

Here are some of my recommendations for the lovely ladies.
